MBT Studio designed by Matthew Tong will present its collection of contemporary furniture at ICFF – North America’s national platform for luxury design – for the first time this May. MBT Studio is a wood-shop in Brooklyn that designs and builds custom furniture, original pieces and commissioned pieces, through a collaborative process with clients. Matthew Tong applies his knowledge of material and craftsmanship to a phase of experimentation and exploration to construct highly examined products.
MBT Studio will present their first furniture collection demonstrating innovation, style and functionality containing both independently designed pieces and collaborative pieces carrying the client’s name. The pieces featured at ICFF will include a bar unit, lighting, a media unit, side tables and original artwork.
Matthew Tong’s path to design started in his hometown of Seattle where he found himself studying the properties of various wood species. He imagined preserving and elevating these elements through design and began sketching, sourcing material and building furniture at home. He went on to study carpentry, design and construction management which led to establishing the NYC office of German-based company Schotten & Hansen, the famed producer of luxury wide plank wood flooring, millwork and furniture. His first collection debuting at this year’s ICFF will be a culmination of his love for materials, design, craftsmanship and building. This collection fulfills his mission is to achieve understated elegance through design and the materials that continually inspire him.
